FROM FADER MAGAZINE:
"I knew from the start that I wanted to stay away from a direct narrative because the song has a very strong and unique vibe, I felt that any narrative would be distracting," the video's director Jon Conklin explained in an email to The FADER. He added: "The digital effect is modeled after a piece of hardware called the Rutt Etra Video Synthesizer. It was designed by Steve Rutt and Bill Etra in 1970 and it was the first ever device of its kind that allowed you to manipulate video rasterization with audio signal... I took the bass line from the song, and pumped it into the effect, so essentially what is happening is it is breaking the video signal up into scan lines and then pulsing them every time the bass note hits."
